Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between fractional CTO and advisor support?
As a fractional CTO, I take co-founder level ownership of your technical side during the build and MVP phase. This is a hands-on build partnership with full responsibility for architecture, development, and launch.
Which commitment tier and rate should I choose?
If you're actively fundraising: Use the ~50% fundraising rate with 50% capacity. Quarterly ($5,400/month) or yearly ($5,100/month) commitments maximize your runway while building. Remember: you'll pay back-pay and scale to full capacity when your raise closes.
If you're already funded or generating revenue: Standard rates with full capacity apply. Most founders choose monthly ($11,500/month) to start, then commit to quarterly ($10,900/month) or yearly ($10,200/month) to save 15-20%.
Pro tip: Longer commitments save money and show commitment, which helps align our work toward your launch goals.
How does the fundraising rate work exactly?
You pay about 50% of the standard rate while actively raising (e.g., $5,100/month on yearly instead of $10,200/month), and I commit 50% of my typical capacity since you're paying roughly 50% less.
When your raise closes, you settle back-pay and switch to full standard rate with full capacity. Full timing, disclosure, and pause terms are in the policy.
Example: On yearly tier for 6 months → Pay $30.6k back-pay, then $10.2k/month with full capacity going forward.
What if my raise takes longer than expected?
The roughly 50% fundraising rate and 50% capacity continue as long as you're actively raising. We'll discuss timeline expectations during our discovery call.
If the raise fails: We can discuss either transitioning to standard rates with full capacity, reducing scope to match your budget, or pausing the engagement. Back-pay from the fundraising period is settled during that transition.
Can I switch between commitment tiers or rates?
Tier changes: Yes, but only at the end of your current commitment period. For example, if you're on monthly, you can switch to quarterly or yearly when the month ends.
Rate changes: If you start at the fundraising rate and close your raise, you immediately switch to standard rates and full capacity (with back-pay due). You cannot switch from standard to fundraising rates mid-engagement.
What happens when I want to transition to a full-time CTO?
I stay involved until I have replaced myself — helping you define the role, interview candidates, and complete the handoff. Transition support is included as long as you are on a standard full-rate engagement. For full engagement boundaries, see the policy.
Do you work with my existing team or solo?
Both. I can work solo to build your MVP from scratch, or integrate with your existing team as the technical leader. Either way, I take full ownership of the technical decisions and execution.
What if I need to pause or cancel?
You can pause or cancel at the end of any commitment period. Since all work is prepaid, there are no refunds for the current period, but you're not locked into future periods unless you've committed to a longer tier (quarterly/yearly).
